Chapter Thirteen

August 1st

8:34 P.M.

They were building up to something amazing.

Arrow could feel it happening.

The sexual tension that had been building between them since he got back from Somalia and decided he was ready to make a move on Piper was reaching its crescendo.

No more slapping Band-Aids on it.

Now kisses weren't enough, he wanted more, burned for more, and all he had to do was look at Piper to know she wanted more too.

“That was amazing. I didn't know you were such a good cook. You never made me anything that amazing while I was staying here,” Piper said, breaking the humming tension as she finished her peach pie.

“Hey, now, I cooked you plenty of amazing meals when you were staying here. You just don’t remember them because you were recovering from a concussion,” Arrow told her, giving an exaggerated pout.

She giggled as he’d hoped she would. “I think I'd remember if you'd made me something this good. If you're trying to woo me you shouldn’t be keeping secrets, you never know, being a good cook could give you a whole bunch of bonus points.”

Reaching across the table, he covered her hand with one of his, his fingers loosely circling her wrist, his fingers brushing across the sensitive skin on the inside of her wrist. “Bonus points, huh? And what exactly is the benefit of those?”

Piper shivered, and he swore the sexy little way she chewed on her bottom lip almost made him abandon the flirty game they were playing and yank her into his arms.

“I think you can use your imagination,” she said breathily. “So, what was the first meal you ever cooked, and how old were you?”

This was the game they’d been playing all night. Their chemistry burned brightly, then Piper would take a little step back, letting it simmer again. He played the game along with her because he could tell she wasn’t all that experienced and he wanted her to be comfortable when the inevitable happened.

“I was ten, and it was ramen noodles. I didn't keep them in the hot water long enough and they were still half-hard, not that any of my sisters complained.”

Turning her hand, she curled her fingers around his. “Was that while Ana was sick?”

That same pang of pain he got every time he thought of his sweet little sister hit his chest, but when he was with Piper it didn't hit as hard. “Yeah. Parents were both at the hospital with her, the little kids were hungry, so I fed them.” The first of many meals he’d prepared over the years. “What about you?”

“Umm, I was eight. My best friend Dana came home with me after figure skating lessons. My mom went to talk to the neighbor, and she was taking forever. We were starved so we turned on the oven. Mom had loaded it up with chicken nuggets and tater tots, the vegetables were already cut and in the steamer, all we had to do was turn it all on. Which we did.
